Set-up
Open Heart Choir
is a mixed amateur choir that started in Stockholm in 2000 with ~40 singers today.
Since 2003 Dana Hofford Roxendal has been leading the choir and in 2006 an Open
Heart Choir was started in Uppsala with now ~25 singers. (Read
more about Open Heart Choir's history.)
Inspiring songs
The choir sings in many different genres: Indian mantras, gospel, Swedish
folk, African celebration, Sufi prayers, even reggae and rap! The common denominator
is, however, that all the songs celebrate the Heart's opening to love, beauty
and freedom here and now.
No performance expectations
Everyone is welcome regardless of previous singing experience. The emphasis is
on the joy of singing and playfulness. There are no audtions and the songs are
taught by rote. Written music is available as well as access to mp3 files of the
different parts on the website for those who want to practice at home. You can
also buy a practice CD for 50 SEK.
Assorted tips will be given
now and then for those who wish to improve their singing voice. A professional
musician will be accompany the choir at all rehearsals.
Try-out
If you have not participated in the previous term, you
may test the choir once for free. There are two free
try-out evenings. After these dates, you may
try out the choir once for 50 SEK up to a
certain date. The amount will be deducted from the
term fee if you join.
Concerts
The choirs in Stockholm and Uppsala practice the same repertoire and the term
culminates with two concerts, one in each city, where the net proceeds are donated
to charitable organisations. Since their inception, the choirs have managed to
donate more than 105,000 SEK to e.g. Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children
and Stadsmissionen.
